Single Baltimore Baby Boomers Back On The Dating Trail

Baby Boomers back out there in the dating market

With Baby Boomer’s getting divorced at historically high rates, there are more Baby Boomers back out there in the dating market this Valentine’s Day week in the Baltimore-area.

Some of the most affluent Baby Boomers in the nation who have annual incomes of $100,000 or more live in this area ranking Baltimore right up there with DC, San Francisco, NYC and Boston as the top markets for Baby Boomers in the United States.

Local Pre-Dating Speed Dating Event Coordinator Emma Skinner says the Baby Boomers she works with here in the Baltimore-area aren’t looking for any drama on the dating trail, especially any Valentines Day drama this week.

“I hear that so much, no drama, I don’t want any drama in my life, been there, done that, it’s not high school anymore,” Skinner tells WBAL’s Scott Wykoff.

Baby Boomers now make-up about a quarter of on-line dating service users nationwide.

“I’m one of the exactly,” says Skinner who is also a Baltimore host for sister company Lock and Key Events. “Things have really changed in the last 20-30 years since Internet dating, it’s just totally different than it was years ago.”

Different from when many of the single dating Baby Boomers in the Baltimore-area were last out there dating.

“That includes me,” says Skinner. “It has been over 20 years since I’ve been out there, boy things have really changed and you kind of just sit and observe sometimes, but I think you just have to go with your gut feeling you know whatever you feel safe and whatever makes you feel secure.”

It’s a second chance at romance that a growing number of Baltimore-area divorced Baby Boomers are experiencing, especially this week in the lead-up to Valentines Day.

That said, Skinner agrees the Valentines Day routine is a little different for single boomers these days.

“By this age you have an idea and you’ve had a lot of experiences to know what you are looking for and you don’t make any exceptions and you have a target and you want to hit that target right on,” says Skinner.

All for many dating Baby Boomers who at this stage of their lives have the disposable income that some of the younger singles out in the dating market haven’t amassed yet.

“It’s not just lets go meet for a glass of wine,” says the Baltimore-area Pre-Dating Speed Dating Event Coordinator. “Maybe it’s lets go down to Baltimore or lets go to Philadelphia and have a nice dinner and have a whole day and go to a concert or something a little bit more elaborate than just sit for a cup of coffee.”

For many of the single Baby Boomers that she works with, she says they find that it’s a whole new ballgame dating now without the goal of getting married as the end game.

“Yes, I am meeting more and more people who say I have no reason to get married anymore, I mean I’ve been there, done that, had my kids, I have grandchildren, whatever, I don’t need to be married,” says Skinner.

She says many of the Baby Boomers back in the dating market now want time to themselves but they still want someone to take vacations with or spend weekends with and not someone they spend all their time with like when they were married.

And when it comes Baltimore-area Baby Boomers and Valentines Day, she agrees that many clients she deals with don’t deal with Valentine’s Day like they did in the past.

“Maybe not so much with the flowers and the jewelry, you maybe take me somewhere to Bermuda or something like that, but yeah, that’s right.”
